Acceptable use policy
Last updated 2026-10-28
Plainmail is for personal and transactional mail between people. Every customer's outgoing mail shares the same sending infrastructure, so one person sending spam hurts everyone. We don't allow it, we watch for it, and we act on it.
What Plainmail is for
Mail you write to people you know or who have asked to hear from you: replying to customers, writing to partners and vendors, sending a receipt or a reply one message at a time.
What's not allowed
- Spam and any unsolicited mail, commercial or not.
- Purchased, rented or scraped lists, or any list of people who did not ask to hear from you.
- Bulk or marketing mail, including newsletters, promotions and cold outreach, even to people who opted in. Use a dedicated email marketing service for that.
- Phishing, or any mail meant to trick people into giving up passwords, money or personal information.
- Malware, or links to it.
- Spoofing: sending as a domain or address you don't own or have no right to use, or forging headers to hide where mail came from.
- Illegal content, or using Plainmail to break the law, harass people or infringe others' rights.
You are responsible for all mail sent from your mailboxes, including mail sent by apps or agents you connect.
How we enforce it
- Rate limits. Each mailbox can send up to 200 messages a day. Accounts also have limits on domains, mailboxes and storage.
- Bounce and complaint monitoring. Outgoing mail is sent through Amazon SES. Bounces and spam complaints are recorded automatically for every account, and you can see your own delivery, bounce and complaint rates in your dashboard.
- Pausing and review. Accounts with high bounce or complaint rates have their outgoing mail paused, and we review them before sending resumes.
- Suspension. If we find a breach of this policy, we may suspend or close the account. For serious abuse such as phishing or malware, we do this immediately and without refund.
Reporting abuse
If you received unwanted mail from a Plainmail customer, email abuse@plainmail.dev. Please include the full message with its headers, which tell us which account sent it. Most mail apps have a "show original" or "view source" option for this.
We read every report and act on it. We won't share your details with the sender.
